The Starlight Children's Foundation is an international nonprofit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life for seriously ill children through the provision of a large menu of both inpatient and outpatient programs and services. Some of their programs include providing children with innovative, technology-driven, distractive entertainment programs, thereby creating a vital outlet for children suffering from pain and depression.
DataHouse developed The StarKids Network for The Starlight Children's Foundation - pro bono. Through the site's various applications, hospital-bound children can communicate with their family, friends and other children using a pen-based system. The electronic pen and tablet provide an accessible means of communication for children who may have limited mobility as a result of their medical treatment. The pen-based software is designed using Java.
The innovative e-mail system that allows children to draw messages and the bulletin board capabilities are based on Lotus Domino. Another unique feature is Fun Time with E-pen, which allows several children to participate in collaborative drawing sessions in real time. The Network also has a news section, an address book, a calendar, an art gallery and a bulletin board.
