In order to comply with a federal mandate for special education, the Hawaii State Department of Education implemented an intranet system that tracks K-12 students who have been disciplined for offenses that include cutting class, suspension and drug use.
To ensure optimum performance for its user base, the DOE wanted to determine the limitations for this application's response time. They had obtained a Sun box with multiple processors for the purpose of testing to see if additional processors and memory would improve the response time of the application's functions. However, the DOE did not have an automated method in which to produce consistent user loads on the application server.
Performance Testing Provides Clarity
Utilizing a performance test tool, DataHouse was able to assist the DOE in structuring and executing a performance test. DataHouse developed the test plan and procedures for which a performance test would be conducted, recorded the specialized test procedures for this complex, Web-enabled Lotus Notes application, and executed the performance test for various quantities of processors and users. In addition, DataHouse worked alongside the engineer provided by the Sun vendor who provided server-side stress test information. With these performance test measurements, the DOE is able to determine the actual response time ranges for the selected functions and provide justification for the pursuit of additional processors and/or changes to the application.
